How to properly care for your yoga mat

Yoga mats are essential for practicing yoga. If you find a yoga mat that fits you, you want to use it for a long time. Regular maintenance is required to prolong the life of your yoga mat. Especially after practicing asanas (yoga poses), it is necessary to frequently clean dirt such as sweat, makeup, and hair. Prevent germs, odors and stains from accumulating on your yoga mat with proper care.

Daily care after asana practice

After one yoga class, wipe down your yoga mat with a cloth sprayed with water. Ideally, wipe it down after each use. Many yoga studios have disinfecting wet wipes and cleaning sprays. Wipe the mat clean from edge to edge and allow the moisture to dry before rolling the mat away. Also, if you are concerned about dirt, wipe off the dirty part with a dedicated yoga mat cleaning cleaner or a cloth soaked in a homemade liquid made by diluting a neutral detergent that is gentle on the skin with water or lukewarm water.

Care instructions: Daily care

  1. Spray a diluted household cleaner or yoga mat cleaner and wipe the entire mat with a soft cloth or sponge.
  2. Wipe off any remaining moisture with a dry cloth.
  3. Dry completely in a well-ventilated place out of direct sunlight.

Care according to material

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) material cannot be washed with water.
PVC has the characteristic that it easily absorbs water, and if it is washed with water, it will deteriorate. Therefore, washing with water is basically NG. However, recently, yoga mats made of PVC material that can be washed with water are also on sale, so be sure to check if they can be washed with water when purchasing.

TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer) material is resistant to water, but cannot be washed with water.
The closed-cell structure of TPE prevents the growth of bacteria inside the mat. For normal care, we recommend spraying matte cleaner or a neutral detergent diluted with water and gently wiping it off. As with PVC, do not soak in water. After cleaning, let it dry completely in a well-ventilated shade. In addition, TPE is an environmentally friendly material that does not generate harmful substances such as dioxins even when incinerated. The dehydration function of washing machines, rotating drums, strong detergents, and the use of dryers are prohibited.
